Fleet expansion

Our fleet of tankers, curtainsiders and service vans continues to expand to meet customer demand.

This expansion includes two ADR Vacuum tankers, one ADR Vacuum tanker trailer and two DAF Tractor units. On top of this significant investment, we have added six new and fully-fitted service vans to our nationwide complement.

Malary now has one of the most extensive active and varied support fleets within its sector, enabling multi-discipline projects to be tightly co-ordinated and managed while individual sites can be serviced more quickly.

This fleet expansion is part of a £2million total development investment which will enable the maintenance of competitive costings alongside improved response times.

Important new facility

We have now opened our modern new Meetings and Presentation suite at our Cottenham HQ.

Our new Meetings and Presentations suite is already proving extremely well-used and popular –  both internally and externally.

Internally it enables senior staff meetings, training sessions and client meetings, as well as presentations from suppliers and other stake-holders.  The two-area suite is fully equipped with the latest AV equipment, and has refreshment facilities and plenty of space for breakout sessions. In addition the walls of the suite display extensive photos and other graphic information to provide an instant visual summary of the company and its range of activities.

Meanwhile a number of clients are finding it a useful central meeting location with parking for their own field staff meetings and we are delighted to offer them use of the facility –  if not already in use!

With our site operations at our HQ becoming ever-busier, the new suite is a quiet and peaceful space to  best enable productive meeting time.

Energy and Environmental divisions now paperless

The benefits of our new job management system from Big Change are already being enjoyed at Malary, with our Environmental and Energy Division already fully transitioned to this protocol. This paperless system will now be rolled out throughout the other divisions of the company.

The system allows an instant update on the progress of all work being undertaken for clients. In a couple of clicks any manager can monitor the progress of each job, including estimated time to completion, and advise the client as necessary.  The instant reports can be saved automatically for future reference and management control.

In addition to greater information accuracy and time saving, the system also helps ensure that resources are made available to meet any new or unexpected demands quickly, and that resources no longer required may be apportioned elsewhere. Meanwhile clients benefit from being informed instantly when a job is completed, or can receive a status update immediately at any stage.

The new system has numerous further options and possibilities which are currently being trialled by our Business Development Team. Our internal maintenance operations are already planned for transitioning to the paperless system in the next two months.

We believe the new Big Change system is a major step forwards in ensuring Malary remains one the UK’s most efficient and customer-focused industrial services companies.

Solar energy now supports processing

Our new solar investment will not only deliver 129,000 kWh of additional electric power per year, but in doing so will render a carbon saving of 51 tonnes every year. This in turn will save the company some £38,518 in energy costs, allowing us to remain extremely competitive in our processing operations.

In particular the solar energy will support our oil filter recycling and processing alongside our various SRF processes. This important new investment underlines our commitment to environmental protection and conservation as a company and boosts our ability to responsibly maintain and grow our recycling operations for the benefit of our customers.

Improved Facilities at Cottenham

Our new large vehicle waiting, unloading and parking area is now fully in service.

This gives us much greater flexibility in managing our processing schedules, and a faster and more efficient turnaround for all vehicles arriving on site. The additional park-up space also minimises any site congestion and allows basic maintenance and trailer adaptations to be easily carried out.

Full length curtainsider and our new walking floor trailers can be easily accommodated, along with tankers, lorries and vans.

UNIQUE new SRF processing at Cottenham

The first phase of major expansion works at our Cottenham facility is now complete, with a ground-breaking new £700,000 Solid Recovered Fuel system now coming on stream.

This process, unique to Malary and to the United Kingdom, extracts extremely high levels of oil and other contaminants from a range of media including rags, wipes and absorbents. The new process leaves a much drier end result for processing into a high-calorific fuel.

This fuel is particularly valuable to high energy users and furnace processes, while further limiting the volume of wastes going to landfill and incineration. In addition, it reduces the overall need for fossil fuels.

It also allows much wider use of SRF within the UK without the need to export.

To cope with the throughput of contracts already signed for the new service, we have also invested in three new “walking floor” trailers to make the collection and transfer of the wastes even more fast and efficient. http://www.malary.co.uk/new-trailers-for-new-service/

Early indications are that this new service process will quickly become one of the most significant in our portfolio of recycling services.

New Trailers for New Service

We have now taken delivery of three new “walking floor” trailers to meet the demands of our new and exciting SRF process, converting contaminated media into a high-calorific fuel. (Read more here) http://www.malary.co.uk/unique-new-srf-processing-at-cottenham/

Inside each trailer is a motorised conveyor system which forms the floor. This allows dry wastes to be loaded or unloaded much faster, using a “roll-on/roll-off” technique from the rear of the trailer. Processed SRF material can thus be discharged direct to each client’s  facility with minimal intervention to the load and maximum use of load space. Overall, it is an extremely efficient way to transport and manage dry waste consignments, with important cost-saving benefits all round.

Variation Permit Granted

We are pleased to announce that the site Variation Permit, for which we started the application process back in 2018, has now been granted by the Environment Agency. This gives us a vital platform for streamlining and consolidating our existing services and processes at Cottenham, while enabling us to confidently plan for future service and process options.

With the growing restrictions on the exporting of waste, in time this will enable us to recover or re-use more waste material here in the UK. This in turn will support our customers in meeting their environmental objectives, containing costs, and minimising the carbon footprint caused by waste transport.

The nature, demands and controls of waste management continue to evolve and with this important new permit in place we have the ability to respond effectively into the future.

Shredding Facilities Upgraded

Following orders placed back in 2019, we have now received and installed two new advanced shredding machines to increase the speed and volumes of container processing. Where used metal drums, IBCs and plastic containers cannot be washed and re-used, the shredding process allows the materials to be used again in the manufacture of new items. This includes plastics and metals, the latter of which are sent off site for re-smelting. The cleaned granulated plastics become feedstock for further plastics production.

The larger of our new shredders (UNTHA RS100) currently deals with both metal and plastic containers of all sizes, while the smaller unit (UNTHA RS60) will be dedicated to our oil filter recycling service, retaining the shredded metal canisters as well as the oil content and paper filter elements for further processing.

With the international focus firmly on the waste plastic and metal containers that are already major land and sea pollutants, we are pleased to reassure our customers that they are contributing to the minimisation of this pollution, while embracing recycling.  Our new equipment also means we can deliver the most cost-effective recycling service available.

New Oil Filter Recycling Now on Stream

Amongst the many new installations and upgrades taking place at our Cottenham HQ is the new oil filter recycling plant. This allows us to directly reclaim every element of an oil filter from the metal casing to the paper filter itself, as well as the waste oil content.

Expansion plans commenced

Ever-growing demand from customers has meant that the current facilities for plastics recycling and oil filter processing are now being expanded at our Cottenham base.

For waste plastics, a further shredder is already being added to the existing plant, while a  £150,000 oil filter separation plant is being built to separate the metal and paper oil filters. This will take the total investment in oil and filter processing to around half a million pounds.

Both facilities are targeted to come on stream within a few months, significantly increasing our overall processing capacity. Further major expansion is planned for Cottenham in 2019 to support both our waste handling and new industrial services sectors.

NEW – Containment pump installation service

  • Automated oil-discriminating pumps reduce or eliminate costs of inspections and manual pump outs
  • Upgrades secondary containment systems to comply with relevant legislation and improves site safety
  • Can be standalone or integrated with existing reporting systems
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Range of equipment and installation options to suit every size of facility

Today’s automated oil-discriminating pumps offer greatly improved efficiency in oil containment management.

Probes in the containment area or bund will detect both water levels and any oil content, with any excess water automatically pumped out if pre-set levels rise. At the same time, any oil content in the water will be immediately identified, so that any tank leakage can be quickly addressed. This saves unnecessary repeat inspections and ensures that tank leakage is identified in the shortest possible time.

Pumps can be set to a variety of detection levels and pump out options to suit each situation. They are widely applicable to outdoor tank locations where rainwater may constantly fill the bund, but are increasingly used in indoor or subterranean locations where the ingress of water is a regular hazard.

Malary provides a complete service from survey and report through to installation and preventative maintenance packages tailored to each client’s specific needs.

New acquisition continues industrial expansion

Malary has purchased the assets and customer base of Roadflow Commercials Ltd based in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Roadflow is owned and operated by father and son team Mark and Rodney Carter, and has been successfully providing fuel, pump and tank maintenance to prestige clients across the UK for more than 10 years.

This acquisition fits well within our current business strategy and supports the ongoing growth plans for our Industrial Division. Roadflow has always been recognised for its high quality professional service and we are focused on ensuring this is seamlessly maintained under the Malary banner.

Amongst other benefits, the acquisition adds a  bespoke 500lt-per-minute fuel polishing unit to the fleet, which is ideal for treating larger volumes or where clients need to have their fuel and tanks back in use as soon as possible.

Mark Carter commented. “We were fortunate to have had a lot of interest in the sale of Roadflow but were very confident that Malary’s own track record of excellent customer service would ensure our customers’ best interests were maintained.”

Successful Achilles Audit Opens Doors

Malary has now successfully completed an important audit by Achilles UVDB, ensuring it is well-placed to taken on further work for all the main utility companies.

The Achilles community is an established system of pre-qualification for utility company suppliers and contractors, confirming their operational standards and status. This provides assurance for the big utility companies that approved suppliers are suitably qualified and resourced to deal with the special demands of working in the utility sector.

For other industrial customers, the new qualification confirms the high operational standards to which Malary works, including the all-important safety and environmental aspects.

Malary already has extensive experience in the utility sector, and this successful audit will encourage other utility companies to put their trust in Malary.

£1 million new vehicle programme

Our investment in new and replacement specialist vehicles to match demand continues apace! With a final spend of over £1 million, our refreshed fleet will include:

9 new vans for industrial and coatings work

3  vacuum tankers for tank and interceptor cleaning with jetting equipment

2  44 tonne Volvo FM articulated lorries to support fuel deliveries

Keep it legal!

Recent legislation – especially for Wales – requires a higher level of secondary containment protection for oil and fuel tanks. Malary provides a range of options to help customers ensure their internal and external  tanks are securely isolated from the floor or ground and not at risk of causing spill or leak pollution.

Solutions range from the simple sealing of floor, bund and pipework areas to contain any spillages or leaks, to the complete removal of old tanks and the installation of new double-skinned units and secure bunds. We will be pleased to advise on the quickest and most cost-effective ways forward. For more information see Secondary Containment.

Expanded Interceptor and Wash Pit service

Brand new tankers and extra trained staff have expanded our popular existing service to match the growing demand and to deliver even faster response times. This is particularly valuable when a site is experiencing drainage overflows through clogging, interupting the efficient operation of the site. Among the new vehicles is a large high-capacity vacuum tanker, which can make more service visits before returning to base, thereby saving fuel miles and reducing the carbon footprint.
